2007 SCCA ACHIEVEMENTS
At the annual AGM, SCCA President, Madhukar `Mark' Sood briefed the member clubs on SCCA Board's and Executives achievements in 2007.
1. OPEN COMMUNICATION- Keeping membership informed- Steps were taken to keep members informed of Cricket developments in SCCA. Minutes of all board meetings were published on website and communications by e.mail to members helped achieve an open communication channel.
2. NEW AND BETTER CRICKET BALLS - The new Duke balls were widely liked by members and even though the costs marginally increased, it was paid from SCCA funds.
3. SORTED OUT LONG OUTSTANDING CLUB SENIORITY ISSUES - The board in its February meeting sorted out the long outstanding team seniority issues and a list was made and appoved. New teams according to seniority were added to Smith Murphy ground (other SCCA ground). San Diego and Victoria CC gave up on their rights to play at Smith Murphy.
4. YOUTH AND SENIOR TEAM- Better achievements in tournaments than past. Both our SCCA U19 and Senior team won the regionals championship in 2007. This is the first time in SCCA history. The U19 team finished 2nd in the National championship which is a considerable improvement from 4th finish the previous year. Unfortunately the Senior team was denied opportunity to participate in Nationals when USACA refused to pay for the travel expences. The team selected is the best in USA and was expected to win the Nationals.
5. FIRST EVER DAY AND NIGHT GAMES- were organized in SCCA history and played with white balls. The Shirley cup tournament was well liked, attended and supported by many spectators and Cricket lovers.
6. NEW TURF PRACTICE AREA- added to Woodley fields.
7. NEW PRACTICE AREA- For Smith Murphy Ground- The area has been marked and material has been purchased and will soon be added, pending the school district approval. This will help teams living in that area to practice closer to home and will also take the load off Woodley.
8. NEW CRICKET CARNIVAL- More participation by members and families- The usual Banquet was replaced by a family carnival coinciding with League play off finals. 15 tickets per team were given rather than usual 10, so more members and families could attend. A Children games section was added. Live Band and DJ entertained the crowd and event was well liked by members.
9. IMPROVED UMPIRES AND GROUND STANDARDS- The boundaries at Marder and Wong fields were reduced during the league games so they are at par with other grounds and provide even playing fields for all games. This also reduced the requests by clubs to play at smaller grounds. The umpring standards were improved by providing continuing education seminars and monitoring system.
10. IMPROVEMENTS AT SMITH MURPHY GROUNDS- A groundsman has been appointed for the Smith Murphy field and the commitee formed from member clubs at SMP worked hard to improve the grounds. A lot of ground development work has been done and SCCA spent in excess of $16000 on improvement projects.
11. YOUTH ACADEMY- better organized & more participation by Youth ages 7 to 16.
12. MORE EXPOSURE OF SCCA AND CRICKET FACILITIES TO OUTSIDE WORLD- Steps were taken to create Cricket awareness and publicity of superb SCCA facilities and management not only in US but also in International arena-
TV COVERAGE- Cricket America
Aussie School teams visit- first time to USA
Vintage Cricket Carnival
Hollywood stars- USA/England game
Lanka Fest
Hollywood Ashes - Australia/ England game where 4 international current and former players participated including legendary Australia Captain Steve Waugh.
13. BETTER IMPROVED RELATIONS WITH CITY OF LA AND BUENA PARK SCHOOLS- Steps were taken to strengthen realtionship with City and school administration. Formalising proper agreements and setup for grounds administration and usage.
14. NEW GROUNDS AT WOODLEY- coming soon. Formal plans to develop two new grounds are in works and a volunteer committee is working on finalising plans. Next step is to raise funds. SCCA board had approved $ 50,000 to be allocated to this project how ever it has not been accomplished as yet due to monies spent and required on litigation by certain SCCA members.
Mark emphasized that new grounds are important and will solve lot of current issues/ problems in SCCA. With two new grounds almost all clubs will be playing at Woodley and SMP grounds. SCCA is also keen on developing new grounds at San Diego to help member clubs in that area.
All of this would not be possible without the help of fellow executives, board members and many volunteers that worked so hard and helped throughout the year.
THANKS TO ALL FOR YOUR SUPPORT & lets work together to make 2008 even better.
